Ex-Interior Minister Tsvetanov Found Guilty on Surveillance Case

Ex-Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov was found guilty in the second court case against him, report the Bulgarian-language media. 

At first instance, the Sofia City Court sentenced him to four years of imprisonment. The sentence can be appealed. 

Tsvetanov was tried for allegedly stopping six times surveillance requests in an investigation against the former head of the Interior's Chief Directorate Combating Organized Crime (GBDOP) in Veliko Tarnovo.

The prosecution demanded a three-year suspended sentence and a ban for Tstvetanov to take senior state positions for three years. 

On Monday, Sofia City Court acquitted Tsvetanov in a trial for large-scale embezzlment of BGN 50 000 from the budget of the Interior Ministry. The sum was allegedly embezzled to the benefit of the aforementioned Orlin Todorov.

Another trial against Tsvetanov starts on Friday – for alleged illegal surveillance.

Tsvetanov has pleaded not guilty on all charges, with his defense insisting they are politically motivated.
