Dimitar Avramov, Expert: BSP Picked Wrong Political Opponent

Ruling BSP picked the wrong political opponent and targeted the rival ABV of former President Georgi Parvanov instead of Bulgaria without Censorship, which attracted its voters.

These were the comments made by political scientist Dimitar Avramov for Novinite.bg following the announcement of exit poll results from Bulgaria's European elections.

"Bulgaria without Censorship targeted his campaign at people with lower social and educational status and at smaller towns. The BSP conducted an inadequate campaign and the party's leadership will take its responsibility," Avramov commented.

According to Avramov, it is early to tell whether the results of the EU vote will affect the government. The expert believes it is not very likely, as the two parties in government have attracted more votes than GERB did.

"It is certain that the BSP will stir trouble in government over the next few months, as processes of re-structuring will begin in the party," he explained.

Exit poll data by Alpha Research revealed at 19:00 local time has shown that GERB has come first in the European elections (28.4%), while the Coalition for Bulgaria, the coalition of the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) was trailing behind with 21.6%.

The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) was third with 15.5%, and the newly-established Bulgarian without Censorship has made a remarkable achievement at its first election test ever with 9.9%, according to Alpha Research.

Another new coalition, the Reformist Bloc, is also expected to make it in the European Parliament as it passed the 5.88% threshold by gaining 6.8% of voter support.
