Bulgarian Quays at Risk of Flooding as Danube River is Rising

The increasing levels of Danube river will not affect shipping, however some of the quays are at risk of being flooded, Bulgaria's Transport Minister Danail Papazov said, Tuesday.

This in turn will lead to suspension of work in the days when the river reaches critical levels, Minister Papazov told Bulgarian National Radio. The port in the city of Lom is at particular risk of being flooded, Papazov added.

The level of Danube at the Bulgarian city Ruse exceed 7 meters as a daily increase of 28 cm was recorded Tuesday morning. Experts expect an increase of more than a meter from the current level by the end of the week, Darik news reports. The critical levels for Ruse are over 880 cm, but even then there is no risk for the urban area of the city.

Meanwhile, over 1 million Bosnians have been affected by the devastating floods and some 100,000 houses have been damaged.

In the Serbian town of Obrenovac, near the capital Belgrade, the Sava River broke through the makeshift sandbag walls and flooded most of the town. The floods over the weekend have claimed dozens of lives in Serbia and Bosnia.
