Bulgarian energy expert Prof. Atanas Tasev believes the situation with the electricity distribution companies poses a threat to the country's energy security if not resolved.

Commenting on the Bulgarian energy watchdog DKEVR's audit of CEZ, Energo-Pro, and EVN, which revealed 2,690 infringements, Tasev is clear that the case should not be referred to the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

"I am rather confused why exactly DANS would have any say on this matter. We are talking here about administrative violations. As far as I know, DANS is a structure dealing with national security", the energy expert commented.

"In recent years, politics started dominating the energy sector, which is extremely counterproductive. As the problems are now deep-rooted, any solution would have to also come through a political consensus", Tasev stressed.

Professor Tasev added that the price of electricity is a very big concern for ruling politicians, and the current government is probably trying to avoid the fate of its predecessors GERB, who were ousted on the back of civil protests against electricity prices. However, the EU regulations for liberalizing prices means that lowering them would be harder to achieve in the coming years.
