The number of active Bulgarians has decreased in 2013, shows the data of the National Statistics Institute (NSI).

In 2013 they were 4.47 million people, or 61.7% of the entire population. The number has decreased by 0.7% (33 000 people), in spite the extension of retirement age by four months.

According to the NSI the trend of a larger number of retired people than new workers continues. In 2013 for each 100 new pensioners there were 62 new workers, whereas in 2001 the ratio was 100:124.

In the end of 2013, the people of retirement age or older were 1.718 million, or 23.7% of the population, while the youth below active age were 1.056 million people, or 14.6%.

The ageing population has brought the average age of Bulgarians up from 40.4 years in 2001 to 43 years in 2013.
