European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has ruled out EU military intervention to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.

Herman van Rompuy commented on the situation in Ukraine during the presentation of his latest book, "Europe in the storm-Lessons and Challenges", on Monday evening in Brussels.

The European Council President, as cited by the "Le Soir" newspaper, said that the EU had to use other tools to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.

He claimed that the EU had to help Ukraine economically and politically so that it could build new institutions.

Herman Van Rompuy insisted that Ukraine had become a victim of a destabilization campaign undertaken by external elements.

Responding to a question of Le Soir's editor in chief, B?atrice Delvaux on a possible new perception of the European Union by its citizens, he said that the Union was perceived as a protective factor in the new EU member states.

The event brought together celebrities like former Secretary-General of NATO Javier Solana, Italy's former Foreign Minister Emma Bonino and Philippe Maystadt, former President of the European Investment Bank.
