South Korean Ferry Search Diver Dies

A South Korean diver taking part in the search efforts of the sunken Sewol ferry has died.

"A civilian diver, Lee, lost the communication line at 25 meters under the sea five minutes into his first dive”, government spokesman Koh Myung-suk stated, cited by CNN.

Lee’s colleagues went in the water to save him, but he was unconscious by then. He was helicoptered to a nearby hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Some 130 divers are involved in the search for more missing bodies from the ferry, which sank on April 16, leaving 264 people dead and 38 missing. A majority of those on board had been school students traveling on a trip to the island of Jeju.

The captain of the ship and a number of crew members are under investigation for neglecting their responsibilities and slowing the evacuation procedure, which led to the high number of casualties.
