Clashes between pro-Russian federalists and Ukrainian troops have reportedly led to a number of casualties in the eastern city of Slaviansk on Monday.
Ukraine's acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov wrote in a statement that pro-Russian forces were using large-calibre weapons and there were casualties on both sides, The Guardian revealed. According to ITAR-TASS, four Ukrainian service men have been killed.
A spokesman for the pro-Russian insurgents clarified that a number of people, including a 20-year-old woman had died.
Slaviansk, in the north of Donetsk region, has been the center of battles between government forces and pro-Russian militia over the past weeks. The interim leadership in Kiev has conducted several "anti-terrorist operations" in which dozens of people were killed.
The West accuses Russia of directly supplying and supporting the armed men fighting against the government forces.
