The mayor of Kharkiv Gennady Kernes, who was shot and wounded on Monday, has been moved to Israel for treatment.

Kernes was transported to Israel overnight, after Kharkiv medics had performed a 2-hour operation in the intensive care, ITAR-TASS reported, citing the spokesperson of the Kharkiv city council. His condition remains critical.

The mayor was shot in the back on Monday morning as he went out for a jog, causing severe wounds in his abdomen and thoracic organs.

Ukraine's Interior Ministry has ordered an immediate investigation and filed a criminal case for an attempted assassination.

Kernes was an outspoken supporter of the ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, but later began advocating for a united and sovereign Ukraine. His dubious political affiliation poses plenty of questions as to who may stand behind this attack.
