Transport Minister Danail Papazov has argued that a sum of over BGN 1 M is invested in transport infrastructure in Bulgaria on a daily basis.

Papazov presented Friday in Sandanski operational program "Transport and Transport Infrastructure" 2014-2020.

He pointed out that the main goal of the operational program was the achievement of a balance between investments allocated to northern and southern Bulgaria, as well as the funding earmarked for road and railway infrastructure.

Papazov underscored that Bulgaria had lost no EU subsidies under the program so far.

He claimed that a total of BGN 132.9 M had been paid to beneficiaries under the program in the first 114 days of 2014.

"The budget of the program amounts to nearly EUR 1.9 B and approximately 70% of the funding has been divided equally between road and railway infrastructure, each receiving EUR 673 M," he added, according to the press office of the Transport Ministry.

Papazov informed that the authorities had negotiated an increase in the funding for the Sofia subway to a total of EUR 400 M, as well as a total of EUR 25 M for building intermodal terminals.

"By the end of 2014, 240km of roads are to be rehabilitated" said Galina Vasileva, head of the "Coordination of Programs and Projects" Directorate at the Transport Ministry.

She also explained that 7 new subway stations and 7.6km of subway line were to be unveiled in Sofia.

Vasileva cited the Ruse-Varna railway line, the Sofia-Kalotina highway and the third subway line in Sofia as priority projects.

She stressed the Ruse-Varna railway line as a project of strategic importance, adding that it would improve the railway infrastructure in northeastern Bulgaria.

As regards the Sofia-Kalotina highway, Vasileva made clear that it would provide the fastest connection from Sofia to Western Europe.
