Floods Cause State of Emergency in 11 Serbian Municipalities

11 municipalities in Serbia, including Kursumlija, Prokuplje, Doljevac, and ?itora?aare in a state of emergency due to floods.

According to reports of public broadcaster RTS, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency, the local Red Cross unit announced that it had sent aid to the affected areas, including Kursumlija, Doljevac and Prokuplje.

The flood-stricken areas were said to have received food packages, mattresses, blankets, rubber boots, and hygiene supplies.

Several swollen rivers in Serbia caused some 440 people to be evacuated over the past few days, leaving thousands of people without water and electricity.

The damage caused by the floods, which affected parts of western, central and eastern Serbia, cannot be estimated until the flood waters recede.

The heavy rains in Serbia caused the water level of a number of rivers to increase for a third day in a row. Apart from that, landslides closed several local roads and main roads.

A new flood wave in the Morava River is expected due to the increase in temperatures and the melting of the snow in western Serbia.

An Interior Ministry representative has said that the current situation is partly due to the poor maintenance of drainage channels, a problem which has existed for several decades.
