Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warned that Ukraine is on the verge of a civil war and criticized the new leadership in Kiev.

"Blood has been shed in Ukraine again. The country is on the threshold of a civil war", Medvedev wrote on his Facebook page.

The Russian Premier reiterated Moscow's position that the new Ukrainian government had come to power following an armed coup.

"Action has led to reaction. A crime against the state resulted in popular protests in the regions. It's a chain reaction of events, political and economic. It is a pity that people became hostage to ungifted politicians who they didn't vote for, and irresponsible radicals who took the place of the police and army", Medvedev underscored.

Following the referendum for the breakaway of Crimea in March, separatist and federalist demands have been on the rise in several eastern Ukrainian cities. Pro-Russian groups have seized government buildings in Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv. In response, the leadership in Kiev has launched a "counter-terrorism" operation on Monday night.

Violence has spread to other cities as well, including Slaviansk and Horlivka.
