Center-right party GERB has demanded the resignation of Bulgarian Education Minister Aneliya Klisarova over incompetent and recklessness.

The GERB party (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) insisted that Klisarova's failure to implement reforms in the sector made it likely for Bulgaria to lose EU funding.

Milena Damyanova, Deputy Education Minister during the term in office of the GERB government, claimed Sunday that the current government had stopped educational reform, refusing to pass basic laws which had been prepared for years.

Damyanova, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), suggested that the School Education Act would be adopted no earlier than 2016, meaning that the first batch of students to which it would apply would graduate in 2023.

She predicted that Bulgaria would reach devastating scores in international programs measuring students' literacy by that time.

Damyanova voiced the demands of GERB for Klisarova's resignation and for the immediate adoption of the School Education Act, adding that the party also insisted that the planned economic growth, expected to bring an extra BGN 80 M into the state budget, be channeled towards education.

She made clear that the increased investments in education would allow an 8% increase in teachers' salaries.
