The old Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo is preparing its candidacy for the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The city of 7,000-year history and its surroundings are known for ancient churches, fortresses, and an impressive landscape of hills and rocks. Exactly these will be the focus of Veliko Tarnovo's presentation for the UNESCO World Heritage List, in the category "Cultural Landscape", the Trud daily writes.

"The remarkable cultural and historic heritage of Veliko Tarnovo and the surrounding region is a source of great pride for locals, as well a huge resource for developing cultural tourism", the city's mayor Daniel Panov commented.

Veliko Tarnovo attracts nearly 1 million tourists annually. Right above the city stands the famous medieval fortress Tsarevets. Another popular destination is the nearby village of Arbanasi, known for its beautiful churches and historic architecture. Through various EU funds and municipal projects, Veliko Tarnovo has been carrying out a campaign of restoring and renovating some of its most important historic monuments and buildings.

Bulgaria currently has 9 sites inscribed into UNESCO's World Heritage List.
