NATO secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen arrives on a two-day visit in Sofia on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday he will receive the Stara Planina Order by Bulgaria's President Rosen Plevneliev and will have a private meeting with him, said the President's press office.

Rasmussen will also have meetings with Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, with Defense Minister Angel Naydenov and Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin.

According to government sources, Rasmussen's visit is surprising as only several days ago the country was visited by one of Rasmussen's deputies – the assistant secretary general for political affairs and security policy Terry Stamatopoulos.

According to reports in Bulgarian-language media, Rasmussen will be welcomed by an anti-NATO rally in front of the Military Club in downtown Sofia on Thursday afternoon. The organisers say the protest will be against Bulgaria's stance on the situation in Ukraine, which, according to them was against the country's best interests.
