World's largest car manufacturer Toyota has recalled around 6.6 M cars of 27 different models over technical issues.

Five separate issues have been cited according to the BBC, including seat rails, steering columns, windscreen wipers and a glitch with the engine starters.

Some 3.5 M of the cars to be recalled are reported to have a problem with a spiral cable attached to the driver's side airbag, which in case of a fault might cause failure to deploy the airbag in a crash.

Toyota said it had received two reports of fires, but none of crashes caused by the technical failures.

BusinessWeek's online edition has described Toyota's most recent recall as "among biggest ever".

The Japanese manufacturer often resorts to recalling of vehicles when defects are found, with a total of 25 M vehicles called back over the past 2.5 years.

The company's president Akio Toyoda has vowed to take measures which would improve its record and shift the focus to quality and efficiency of the production.

Other car makers, like General Motors, have also adopted the practice, but in the case of Toyota some suggest its reputation might be tarnished to a dangerous extent.

Earnings of the company, however, have not yet been affected, with a USD 18.6 B forecast profit for the 12 months prior to March 31 this year.
