Greek PM's Aide Steps Down as EU Election Candidate

Failos Kranidiotis, one of Greek Prime Minister Andonis Samaras's closest aides, will not run at May 25's European Elections.

The lawyer will exit the conservative New Democracy party's bid for MEP due to ideological infighting among the ruling conservative New Democracy and its partners from socialist PASOK, the Enlish-language website of Greek newspaper Kathimerini has reported.

Kranidiotis said that "the agenda that [New Democracy's] ideological opponents are trying to impose is to identify every national voice with fascism, racism, the far-right" and to make the party feel guilty about issues that have nothing to do with it.

Kranidiotis is know for harsh rhetoric on issues as immigration and strong nationalism that often put him at odds with members of his party and the opposition.

Another aide of Samaras, Panayiotis Baltakos, resigned earlier in April as cabinet secretary after a leaked video recording showed him meeting a spokesman for far-right Golden Dawn party.
