Bulgaria is hoping to host a tournament of the Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP), according to Stefan Tsvetkov, President of the Bulgarian Tennis Federation.

In an interview for the Meridian Match sports newspaper, Tsvetkov informed that talks on organizing a competition from the category of ATP250 were forthcoming, adding that it was realistic to expect to organize the event in 2017.

"This is something we have to do. Hardly anyone needs convincing; there is consensus on the matter. Talks are yet to be held and efforts are yet to be made. It is absolutely possible to organize a tournament of the ATP250 category in 2017 in Bulgaria. We need to unite the efforts of all parties and I believe it will happen," Tsvetkov said, as cited by dnevnik.bg.

He noted that the current calendar of the ATP included 40 tournaments of the ATP 250 series, of which 22 were held in Europe.

Tsvetkov underscored that these tournaments usually brought together a number of star tennis players.

He reminded that in October and November 2014 Bulgaria would host for the third time the WTA Tournament of Champions.

Tsvetkov explained that it would be the last edition of the championship to be held at the Arena Armeets sports hall in Sofia, adding that in 2013 the event had drawn weak interest, with the hall remaining half empty during a number of matches.

Tsvetkov expressed hopes that the WTA event would attract a much larger number of people in 2014.
