The head of the Veliko Tarnovo Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry will be replaced on account of errors in conducting the Lyaskovets operation.

During a special operation to disarm a psychologically unstable man in the town of Lyaskovets on March 14, a police officer was shot dead and 3 of his colleagues were injured. The case spurred a debate on how adequately the operation was conducted.

"Mr. Hristo Hristov (head of Veliko Tarnovo police) will be removed from his position, as he has failed to assert the necessary control and even avoid the need to conduct such an operation. It is with regret that I must make this move, as his recent record has been exceptional", Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev told in a press briefing.

Earlier investigations of the Interior Ministry showed that 2 policemen had spoiled the operation by going close to the shooter Petko Petkov's home in order to take photos, which had raised suspicion in the man. They will also be punished for their unauthorized actions, Yovchev added.
