Bulgarians Spend 6 Times More Money On Their Cars Than On Health

The Bulgarians spend around six times more money for their cars than for their health, shows a study of Siemens Healthcare Sector. 

The company compared data of the Bulgarian Automotive Union (BAU) and the National Statistics Institute (NSI) for 2012 and released it on the occasion of World Health Day.

The BAU data shows that the average total sum a Bulgarian spends per year on a 10-15-year-old car with a petrol engine with 101 horsepower is BGN 1267.

The sum includes road tax, vignette stickers and car insurance – an average of BGN 667, the change of summer and winter tyres – around BGN 100 and regular maintenance – between BGN 300 and 500. The price of petrol – around BGN 5000 for 20 000 km, is not included in the sum. 

At the same time the NSI data shows that the average sum for healthcare and prevention is BGN 212. 

“The data shows that Bulgarians still do not grasp the importance of taking good care of their health,” said Todor Vodenicharov, head of Siemens Healthcare Sector for Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro. “All studies show that regular health checkups and prevention are an important factor for the early discovery of dangerous illnesses and their successful treatment.”
