Bulgaria to Provide New Social Housing for Roma Population

Bulgaria's Ministry of Investment Planning is considering new standards for the construction of social housing for the Roma population in the country.

The standards should provide a minimum of 7.5 sq.m. living area per household member, Minister of Investment Planning Ivan Danov announced, cited by BGNES.

"It is possible that under the new standard the living area is a bit larger, but there will be no 150 sq.m. dwellings," he explained.

In March, Minister Danov suggested that the Government should establish a fund for the construction of social housing which will be rented to socially underprivileged citizens under preferential conditions.

The proposal is for the social housing to be built near Roma neighborhoods and the sites to have complete infrastructure. The territory of the nearby Roma districts will be renovated, possibly with municipality funds.
