Bulgaria's Foreign Minister sees Schengen accession and removal of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) as necessary steps before assuming the EU Presidency in 2018.

"In 2018, Bulgaria will assume for the first time the rotational presidency of the European Union. An important element in our preparation for an effective presidency includes reaching an agreement for Bulgaria's entrance into the Schengen area and the removal of reporting under the EU's Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM)", Minister Kristian Vigenin said during the opening address of Thursday's conference with Bulgaria's Honorary Consuls.

"As for NATO, Bulgaria views the Euro-Atlantic partnership as a guarantee for global peace and security. It is of primary importance for our national interests as well. In this light, Bulgaria is a proponent of NATO's "open doors" policy, especially with regards to the Western Balkans and Georgia", Vigenin added.
