Lufthansa Employees Go on Strike, 600 Flights Cancelled

Hundreds of Lufthansa flights will be canceled because of a planned strike at German airports, which begins on Thursday night.

According to a press statement published on Wednesday, the German airline would be grounding 600 flights, the DW reports.

Germany's main union Ver.di reported that employees will go on strike at the airports in Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne - Bonn, D?sseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover and Stuttgart.

Most of the flights cancelled on Thursday would be within Germany and Europe. Lufthansa urged passengers to refer to its official website for more information and possible alternative travel arrangements.

Lufthansa subsidiary Germanwings, as well as Air Berlin may also join the walkouts which are scheduled to begin at 3:30 am local time and end at 2:30 pm on Thursday.

Unions are demanding a pay raise of 3.5%, plus EUR 100 one-off payment, for 2.1 million federal and municipal workers. Talks aimed at settling the dispute are due to resume next week.
