The chief architect of Bucharest Gheorghe Patrascu has spoken in favor of promoting connectedness between the Romanian capital and the Bulgarian Danube city of Ruse.

Patrascu, as cited by Adjepress and the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency, recommended encouraging the development of the southern part of Bucharest, the most important goal being to improve connections to Bulgaria's Ruse.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Patrascu explained that the Romanian capital was not taking proper advantage of its proximity to the fourth biggest city in Bulgaria, Ruse.

"We are not doing anything to encourage Bulgarians to make better use of, for instance, the airport in Bucharest, or the services in the capital, which is something very natural in Europe," he said.

Patrascu suggested that the tendency to develop the northern part of Bucharest as opposed to the southern part was not to be abolished but brought under control.

He argued that Bucharest had failed to take sufficient advantage of its geographical location after 1989, adding that the Romanian capital had simply retained its role as a regional development hub.
