Immigrants will slow down the ageing of Bulgaria's population, but will not solve the demographic problem in the long term, shows a study of Bulgaria's Academy of Sciences (BAN).

The survey is based on a forecast of the Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute (NSI), which estimates that by 2060 in the country will be arriving an average of 15 000 immigrants per year. They would be mostly young adults and will, to a certain extent reverse the trend of the ageing population and the decreasing workforce.

The study predicts that in 2060 in Bulgaria will live 5.1 million Bulgarians and nearly half a million immigrants. People over the age of 64 will be about 30% of the population.

The BAN experts, however, note that the eventual positive effect of the influx of immigrants will be only midterm. The specialists recommend that the state takes measures to attract skilled and educated immigrants and limit the influx of religious fanatics and people with criminal past.
