Lyaskovets Shooter Charged with Premeditated Murder of Police Officer

Petko Petkov, the man who shot dead a police officer in the northern Bulgarian town of Lyaskovets, has been charged with premeditated murder.

Katerina Leshtakova, spokesperson for the prosecuting authority in Veliko Tarnovo, announced Sunday that Petkov had been charged with premeditated murder of a police officer under Article 116, Paragraph 2 of the Penal Code on the basis of investigative measures conducted during the pre-trial proceedings launched on March 14.

On March 14, 53-year-old Petkov shot dead a police officer and wounded three other police officers during a special police operation aimed at seizing weapons from his home in Lyaskovets.

Leshtakova, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), made clear that the 76-year-old mother of the shooter, who was detained for 24 hours on Saturday on charges of storing illegal ammunition would be released from custody with no charges filed.
