Rositsa Yanakieva, mayor of Bulgaria's town of Pernik said the EU takes more than it gives to the member states.

In an interview for the Russian TV channel Rossia 24, Yanakieva said the EU was imposing limitations and regulations, which were against the best interests of the people in the member states.

„I often tell our foreign guests from aspiring EU members that what they will give to the EU is a lot more than what the EU will give to them“, Yanakieva,  said for the TV channel. “I was among those who voted for the EU membership. The balance of the positives and the negatives of the EU membership is very fragile. But now I could say that the negatives are more.”

Yanakieva is a member of ex-President Georgi Parvanov's ABV Movement, consisting of renegades from the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

This s not the first occasion of an ABV member speaking against the EU. Several weeks ago former foreign minister and current MEP Ivailo Kalfin said Bulgaria should distance itself from the EU stance on the situation in Ukraine and remain neutral to avoid displeasing Russia.
