There may be a breakthrough in the search for the disappeared Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

Malaysia's military believes it has tracked the missing jetliner by radar off the Strait of Malacca, off the western coast of the country, Euronews reports.

The location is far from where the plane last made contact with the air control system, which was off the east coast.

The Boeing 777 took off from Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, destined for Beijing, but disappeared an hour after departure.

"It changed course after Kota Bharu and took a lower altitude. It made it into the Malacca Strait", a Malaysian military official said.

The Department of Civil Aviation will investigate this report, as the rescue search area has been widened.
