A total of 18% crime decline has been registered in Bulgaria since the beginning of the year, Interior Ministry chief secretary Svetlozar Lazarov announced.

Since the start of the special police operation to tackle common crime for the period Feb 10 – March 6, the crime drop has been about 26%, Lazarov told Bulgarian National Television.

"The number of solved crimes has increased by a few percent compared to the same period in 2013. Considering the 20-26% crime drop and the 50% solved criminal cases, it seems that we are headed in the right direction," Lazarov added.

The use of gendarmerie in small towns is just one of the 15 measures to tackle common crime, IM chief secretary stressed.

Lazarov suggested that the money for new employees could come from EU funds and from local authorities.
