Vladimir Putin Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has been nominated for Nobel Peace Prize.

The director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute Geir Lundestad confirmed this on Wednesday, quoted by the ITAR-TASS news agency.

A record 278 candidates, including 47 organizations, received nominations for the 2014 prize. Among the public figures are Edward Snowden and Pope Francis. 

Committee members who met on Tuesday added their own proposals with a focus on recent turmoil around the globe.

"Part of the purpose of the committee's first meeting is to take into account recent events, and committee members try to anticipate what could be the potential developments in political hotspots," Lundestad said.

The Nobel Committee will announce the winner in mid-October.

Putin has been previously nominated for the award in 2013, by the International Academy of Unity of Nations of the World.
