Sofia Monument Painted with 'Putin, Go Home!'

The Mound of Brothers monument in Sofia was painted again on Wednesday night. 

The inscription under the two main figures says “Putin, Go Home!” and “Glory to the Goryani”. 

The Goryani were a guerrilla resistance against the communist regime in Bulgaria, most active in the late 1940's and the first half of the 1950's.

Two figures on each side of the monument were painted in blue and yellow and white and red – the colors of the Ukrainian and Polish flags. One one side was written “Crimea” and on the other - “Katyn 5.III.40”. 

On Wednesday is marked the anniversary of the Katyn massacre in which the USSR murdered thousands of Polish officers, soldiers and intellectuals. 

This is the second time the Mound of Brothers is “decorated” in less than a week – the first time the two main figures were packed in red and white as martenitsa on March 1. 

This is the second monument, commemorating Bulgaria's communist past, which is being painted. The other one is the Soviet Army monument in the center of Sofia, which was also painted twice within the past several weeks – with slogans referring to the events in Ukraine.
