Lithuania recalled for consultations its ambassador to Moscow on Sunday over the crisis in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic has demanded explanations from the Russian Ambassador to Prague over the escalating tensions in Ukraine.

The measures were adopted in response to the decision of Russia's upper house of parliament on Saturday to clear President Putin's request to use the country's military on Ukrainian territory, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

Lithuania's Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning Russia's illegal actions against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic suggested that Russia had launched an invasion aimed at occupying the Crimea region.

Meanwhile, following consultations at the Elysee Palace between President Francois Hollande and Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, it was decided to freeze France's participation in the preparations for the G8 meeting in the Russian resort of Sochi in June.

Earlier on Sunday, Fabius called on the other countries participating in the preparations for the summit to do the same.

Among the other countries which have so far announced they are terminating  their cooperation for the preparations for the G8 summit in June are Canada, UK and US.
