Romania's National Liberal Party has abandoned the country's ruling coalition.

The split, which left Prime Minister Victor Ponta with only a slim majority in parliament, occurred over ministerial appointments, according to reports of DPA.

The decision of the National Liberal Party to leave the ruling alliance was announced late on Tuesday, with its ministers expected to resign on Wednesday.

Ponta's leftist Social Democrats are to seek a vote of confidence from parliament within days as a result of the step.

Romania faces European Parliament elections in May and a presidential election in November.
