New Italian PM Wins Narrow Confidence Vote in Senate

Italy's new Prime Minister Matteo Renzi received the backing of the upper house of Parliament for his newly formed cabinet.

Following over 10 hours of debates in Parliament on Monday, Renzi won the confidence vote with 169 MPs "for", and 139 "against".

A new vote will be held on Tuesday in the lower house, but in this case Renzi should not have as much difficulties in grabbing the majority, as his center-left Democratic party dominates clearly, unlike in the senate, The Guardian reports.

The 39-year-old Prime Minister, the youngest ever in the country's history, labeled his reform program "bold and innovative", while the opposition accused it of lacking detail.

Renzi told his opponents that if the reforms fail, the full blame would fall on him.

Italy is faced with a troubled economy, high unemployment rate, and wide public discontent with the political elite.

The new Prime Minister will attempt to push forward reforms in the justice system, boost foreign investment, and clear the debts of public administration to the private sector.
