The Ukrainian Parliament has named Oleksandr Turchynov as the interim President on Sunday, according to the BBC.

On Saturday, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) named Turchynov as the acting Prime Minister and speaker of Parliament, after voting out President Viktor Yanukovych.

Yanukovych has not submitted his resignation, but his whereabouts are unconfirmed. Earlier reports suggested that he had attempted to leave the country with a charter flight out of Donetsk, but was stopped by the State Border Service.

Turchynov, 49, was acting as interim PM in 2010 after the resignation of Yulia Tymoshenko. He was also Deputy Prime Minister between 2007-2010.

The early presidential elections will most likely take place in May.
