Russian President Vladimir Putin is sending an envoy to Ukraine, at the request of President Yanukovich, to try to mediate talks between the government and opposition.

"Putin decided to send Russian human rights ombudsman Vladimir Lukin on this mission," state-run RIA quoted the spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, as saying after a telephone conversation between Putin and Yanukovych.

Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers hold an extraordinary meeting with Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition - after at least 60 people were killed in fresh clashes in Kiev.

The three ministers from Poland, Germany and France met with President Yanukovych on Thursday before meeting with the opposition.

Britain has summoned Ukraine's ambassador to London calling on him to stop the violence Thursday.

Ukrainian protesters hurling petrol bombs and paving stones drove riot police from the central square in Kiev on Thursday despite a "truce" after ViktorYanukovych said he had agreed with opposition leaders.

Earlier the ministry said Berkut riot policemen had been armed with combat weapons, an attempt to regain control of violent protests.
