Bulgaria's Antoniya Parvanova Nominated MEP of the Year

Bulgaria's MEP Antoniya Parvanova has been nominated for the Parliament Magazine's MEP Awards in the Justice and civil liberties category.

Parvanova, who is a deputy leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and chair of the National Movement for Stability and Progress party (NDSV) is the only Bulgarian MEP to be shortlisted for the prestigious MEP awards which act as a showcase on efforts and achievement of the European parliamentarians.

This year's awards will not only recognize the hard work done by MEPs in the past year, but over the past parliamentary term.

"The forthright Bulgarian has proven to be a strong and constant supporter of women's rights in the area of sexual and reproductive rights, and access to healthcare," the official MEP awards website states.

"In this, she has focused on the right and access to in-vitro fertilization treatments for women and couples. Parvanova, a deputy leader of ALDE who joined parliament along with her native country's EU accession in 2007, has shown leadership in promoting respect and protection of the rights of ethnic minority and migrant women," the statement continues.

"Nominated for her efforts throughout her parliamentary career in upholding citizens' rights and gender equality with "vehement commitment", her endeavors on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime directive was considered "crucial in reaching a successful outcome". She has also been applauded for her key role on dossiers such as "the gender pay gap, the role of women in business leadership, work-life balance and gender equality"."

The other nominees in the Justice and civil liberties category are the Hungarian Kinga G?l of European People's Party (EPP) and the Finnish Eija Ritta Korhola of EPP.

Antoniya Parvanova has already received the Parliament Magazine's award in the Health category in 2010.

Each year EU policy stakeholders are asked to submit their choice for which MEP they think as made an excellent contribution in an EU policy area which they work in.The nominations are collated by The Parliament Magazine and a shortlist for each category is drawn up.The shortlist is announced and voting is opened to all MEPs.

The results are collated by The Parliament Magazine and will be announced at the MEP Awards ceremony held on 18 March 2014 at the Concert Noble in Brussels.
