The Bulgarian Velin Dimitrov recently won two prizes at robotics competitions in the US.

One is for digital sensors which detect muscle impulses and could improve the life of people with disabilities and the other is for a robot, which can be used in disaster areas.

Dimitrov, 24, is a PhD candidate at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts, and has been living in the US since he was four, when his family emigrated to Boston.

The Kalenian Award of USD 25 000 was given to Ta?kin Pardir, assistant professor of robotics engineering and Dimitrov for their work on an interface designed to capture muscle movement electrical signals to control the “next generation of assistive devices.”

The other award is for the software and hardware development of robots, which can be used in areas where human presence is impossible or too dangerous, such as nuclear disaster areas.

“Maybe one day there will be investments for the development of such technologies in Bulgaria”, Dimitrov told Bulgaria's public TV channel BNT.

Two years ago Dimitrov won his first prize, by NASA, for his contribution to the bulding of a robot that can, without human control, find and collect geologic samples from a wide and varied terrain.
