Bulgaria's Consumer Protection Act to Ban Fine Print in Contracts

Companies in Bulgaria will not be able to use fine print in customer contracts anymore.

The prohibition to include small or large print in the contracts will be introduced with amendments to the Consumer Protection Act, suggested by the socialist MP Ivan Ibrishimov, local media reported.

The amendments will prevent companies from putting misleading terms and conditions in fine print.

"All terms and conditions in the contracts should be written in identical print. Thus, mobile operators, electricity distributors and other companies will not be able to use fine or large prints," Ibrishimov commented.

The amendments aim at protecting the elderly or illiterate customers, he explained. So far, Ibrishimov has not considered the kind of sanctions that would be enforced on violators. Those would probably be the same fines stipulated in the Аct.

The proposed amendments to the Consumer Protection Act have been well received among MPs of all parliamentary groups.
