Strong Earthquake Hits Western China, No Casualties Reported

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake has hit China's western region of Xinjiang on Wednesday afternoon.

The quake struck at 5:19 PM Beijing time at a depth of 12 km, the Xinhua agency reported. There are no reports of casualties or damages for the time being, and the area of the epicenter is sparsely populated.

Local authorities say the closest populated area is some 50 km away.

Aftershocks of 5.7 and 5 on the Richter scale followed the initial tremor.

On Tuesday, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake jolted Yutian County in the same province, but nobody was reported dead or injured.
