North, South Korea Hold Family Reunion Talks

North Korea and South Korea are holding their first high-level talks in 7 years, at the border village of Pnamunjom.

Despite not releasing a particular agenda, it is believed that the two sides are discussing the issue of family reunions, planned for later this month, the BBC reports.

Pyongyang threatens to call off the reunions if the South proceeds with its joint military exercises with the United States.

"This is an opportunity to open a new era on the Korean peninsula", Kim Kyou-hyun, head of the South Korean delegation to the talks said.

The reunions concern families split by the partitioning of Korea following the 1950-53 war.

South Korean officials admitted they were "pleasantly surprised" by Pyongyang's invitation to hold such talks.
