EU Keeps Sanctions as Last Resort Option for Ukraine

The European Union does not rule out the option of economic sanctions against Ukraine, in case the situation in the country deteriorates.

"Nobody wanted immediate and general sanctions. However, we decided to look again at targeted sanctions if ever the situation becomes worse, which is not the case now", French Minister for European Affairs Thierry Repentin said, cited by Euronews.

During last week, the EU suggested it was preparing a financial assistance package for Ukraine, if the country's leadership moves forward with political and judicial reforms.

Despite a decrease in the level of violence, anti-government protesters still gather on a daily basis in the capital Kiev, to express their anger at the country's U-turn on European integration.

The resignation of the PM Mykola Azarov served as a slight distraction, but the majority of demonstrators still call for the President Viktor Yanukovych to step down.

The EU is closely monitoring the situation, with its Foreign Policy chief Catherine Ashton going on frequent visits to Kiev.
