The European Union says it will seek closer ties with Cuba, through launching negotiations aimed at boosting trade and investment.

"There is common ground and we are actually already exploring to have common initiatives under various cooperation programmes that could include certain sectors of human rights", EU Ambassador to Havana, Herman Portocarero said, quoted by Euronews.

The EU is already Cuba's biggest foreign investor and second biggest trading partner after Venezuela, following the lifting of sanctions to the Caribbean island nation in 2008.

Brussels is expressing willingness to back Cuba's market-oriented reforms under President Raul Castro. The EU negotiators will aim to conclude a Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement by the end of 2015.
