Bulgarian Accommodations' Revenues Up 18.5% Dec 2013 Y/Y

The total revenues from nights spent in accommodation establishments in Bulgaria in December 2013 reached 32.9 million BGN or by 18.5% more compared to December 2012.

An increase was registered both in revenues from Bulgarian visitors - by 18.7%, and from foreigners - by 18.2%.

The data was published Monday by the country's National Statistics Institute (NSI).

In December 2013, Bulgaria had 1 882 functioning accommodation establishments - hotels, motels, camping sites, mountain lodges and other establishments for short-term accommodation with more than 10 beds.

The total number of rooms in them was 54.8 thousands and the beds were 109.8 thousands. In comparison with December 2012, the total number of accommodation establishments increased by 8.7% and the number of beds in them - by 6.5%.

The total number of nights spent in all accommodation establishments, registered in December 2013, was 681.5 thousand or by 13.2% more in comparison with the same month of the previous year, while the greatest increase (by 16.9%) was observed in 1 and 2 star accommodation establishments.

In December 2013, 67.1% of all nights spent by foreign citizens and 34.2% of all nights spent by Bulgarians were in 4 and 5 star hotels. 30.7% of all nights spent by Bulgarian residents and 19.9% of all nights spent by foreigners were in 3 star accommodation establishments, while in the rest of accommodation establishments (with 1 and 2 stars) they were 35.1 and 13.0%, respectively.

In December 2013, arrivals in all accommodation establishments increased by 7.7%, compared to the same month of 2012, and reached 334.9 thousand. Bulgarian guests were 76.9% of all arrivals and the majority (65.2%) of them spent nights in 1, 2 or 3 stars hotels with 1.9 nights on average.

Arrivals of foreigners were 77.2 thousand and 68.8% of them spent nights in hotels with 4 and 5 stars. The average for foreigners was 2.4 nights.

In December 2013, the total occupancy of beds in accommodation establishments was 20.9% and the highest one was in 4 and 5 star establishments - 27.6%, followed by occupancy in 3 star facilities - 19.6%, and in 1 and 2 star ones - 16.0%.

In comparison with the same month of the previous year, occupancy of beds increased by 1.5 percentage points. The greatest increase was registered in accommodation establishments with 1 and 2 stars - by 2.1 percentage points.
