6 Parties to Enter Bulgaria's Parliament In Case of Early Elections

Six parties would cross the 4% threshold to enter Bulgaria's Parliament if the general elections were held today, according to polling agency Mediana.

According to a poll conducted among 1008 respondents on February 3-7, the six parties which would make it into Parliament are the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), center-right party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), the Bulgaria without Censorship party of controversial TV journalist Nikolay Barekov, right-wing party The Reformist Bloc and, possibly, nationalist party National Front for the Salvation of Bulgaria (NFSB).

According to the results, BSP was supported by 24.8% of the polled, GERB by 19.3%, DPS by 9.5%, Bulgaria without Censorship by 7.1%, The Reformist Bloc by 6.4%, and NFSB by 3.3%.

Kolyo Kolev, director of the Mediana polling agency, explained at a press conference on Sunday that the poll indicated that the ruling coalition and the opposition enjoyed almost equal support, the ruling coalition boasting a slight edge.

He went on to say that the approval ratings were a clear indication of the pre-election situation in the country.

Kolev said that Georgi Parvanov, former two-term President, former Chair of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and current leader of the ABV Movement (Alternative for Bulgarian Revival), had won the highest level of support, at 54 points, compared to a rate of 42 points in November 2013.

"Unlike in November, Parvanov managed to win overt many supporters from the electorate of GERB and The Reformist Bloc, as well as other opposition formations," he stated.

Kolev noted, however, that the core of supporters of Parvanov's ABV Movement consisted almost entirely (80%) of former supporters of BSP.

He made clear that the survey indicated that levels of pessimism had decreased substantially over the past two months, giving way to feeble optimism.

The sociologist informed that Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski had registered an increase by 6% in his approval rating, while the level of disappointment with him had dropped by 2%.

He said that 1/3 of the polled still sought the resignation of the socialist-led coalition government, while 45% claimed that the Cabinet had to be given the opportunity to do its job.
