Utility Bills to Send Bulgarians to Streets again

Participants in last year's winter protests against monopolies and poverty in Bulgaria announced Thursday they are resuming their rallies.

They will gather in front of the headquarters of the City Hall in downtown Sofia and threaten to publically set on fire their recent utility bills.

The rally will start at noon Sunday.

Organizers such as Doncho Dudev, a key figure from the protests in February 2013, says nothing had changed in the course of the year so their demands also remain the same – individual contracts with the heating utility, the City Hall to take over the water utility and lower water prices, and ending the racket of drivers over parking rules in the city.

From the City Hall, they will march to the Parliament and then back to the park near the Military Club.

"We will also change the way of protesting – those responsible for the misery in Bulgaria have names and home addresses. We will go to their houses to rally. A wave of protests is looming," said Dudev.

The protests last February led to the resignation of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and his centrist Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) government.
