EU Wants to See Justice for Recent Violence in Ukraine

The EU remains concerned with the situation in Ukraine and urges politicians to act urgently for solving the crisis.

"Although there is a sense of violence decreasing, there is still great concern about the situation on the ground and to see that those who have committed violence are brought to justice", EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said after her meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Kiev on Wednesday.

Ashton reiterated the EU's willingness to support Ukraine with financial aid, if the dialogue for reconciliation continues.

After months of anti-government protests, the country's PM Mykola Azarov resigned at the end of January. Nonetheless, demonstrators demand the resignation of the President Yanukovych, who continues to seek closer ties with Russia.

Ukrainian opposition parties have called on the EU to step in with sanctions, after the violence in Kiev got out of hand, resulting in several deaths.
