Bulgaria's Ataka Withdraws Proposal for Belene NPP debate

Bulgaria's nationalist Ataka party withdrew its proposal for discussing the restart of the Belene nuclear power plant project.

The proposal was motioned by the nationalists, who used the parliamentary procedure allowing opposition parties to initiate debates, without a mandatory voting.

Ataka was proposing the cancellation of the 2012 decision of Parliament to stop the construction of the power plant.

The former interior minister Rumen Petkov, who is also a member of recent socialist breakaway formation ABV, claims Ataka withdrew their motion because of "some bargain with BSP". He said there were several options for restarting the Belene project, but the fact that the matter is not discussed in Parliament means that there was some tacit agreement.

The restarting of the Belene project was one of the main election promises of the Socialists.
