Olympic Flame Arrives in Sochi after Longest Relay in History

The torch bearing the Olympic flame has arrived Wednesday in the Olympic village in Sochi, Russia, where on Friday the 2014 Winter Olympics will kick off.

The flame is scheduled to go through Sochi for three days, which is the longest in history, reports RIA Novosti.

This is not the only first in the 2014 Olympic flame relay, which has seen the torch carried for 123 days over some 65,000 km covering the entire span of Russia.

This was the first time that the Olympic torch has reached the North Pole and was carried on space walk, by cosmonauts at the International Space Station.

The flame also passed underwater in lake Baikal, then being carried Europe's highest peak, Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus, before reaching Sochi.

Wednesday Russia's national flag was raised at the Olympic village at a solemn ceremony attened by Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
