Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has voiced the idea to have referendums alongside all future elections in the country.
Speaking Tuesday, he stressed that there was nothing better than combining European, local and presidential elections with referendums.
"Referendums are not forecasts, but they are a way to see what people think," said he.
Regarding the referendum on ways to conduct elections that he recently proposed, the President noted that he hoped it would be just one of the many in upcoming years and until the end of his term.
"Conducting referendums together with elections would not cost much or even nothing at all, but will have huge effect. Instead of politicians being spokespersons of the people as it has been in the last 24 years, it is high time to start asking these people what they think regardless of the outcome. I am pleased the debate is already happening. There is a consensus in society that the Election Code and the way we organize elections must be improved," Plevneliev concluded.
